Samsung Electronics
Senior Product Designer
With a multi-disciplinary team, I innovated the “future of the TV remote”, designing original UI/UX software and hardware, rooted in a content-first, provider-second concept
I also owned the design of the Samsung SmartHub TV UX/UI, leading team members from UX-CA and HQKorea offices
Samsung Electronics Project PX
With the increase of content consumption, ways content is provided (App Streaming, Subscriptions, Cable, Antenna, etc) and industry research, our team was tasked to invent a new remote control experience, streamlining the content into one, centralized, experience.
User studies revealed multiple pain points;
Users knowing what they want to watch but providers bloat and fatigue in finding where to watch.
A disconnect between the limited analog remote and the 10-ft viewing experience
Having to use multiple remotes to control different types of content
I led the design of the App partnership experience and player control. Major challenges presented themselves early on as TV content providers are fiercely competitive and none of them liked the idea of sharing an interface with one another or giving control over the design to Samsung.
The solution tablet was an Android & Tizen based product that would control the entire TV experience, including channels and streaming. It was not a tablet with apps in the traditional sense, but rather a dedicated tablet for the living room table that only served one purpose; a companion bundled with the Samsung 2015 high-end TVs.
